Clinical experience
Dr. Muhanna completed his ENT surgery training in Jerusalem and he then undertook advanced training in Head and Neck surgery, Skull Base and Reconstructive Surgery in Princes Margaret Cancer center, Toronto, Canada
Dr. Muhanna joined recently the Otolaryngology; Head and Neck and Maxillofacial Surgery division as the Director of the Head and Neck Surgery Unit. Dr Muhanna's areas of expertise include cancers of the oropharynx and larynx, oral cavity, sinonasal cavity, Skull base, cancers of the salivary glands and thyroid surgery, Endoscopic and open surgery , Robotic surgery and reconstructive Micro surgery .
Academic experience
Dr. Muhanna is leading an Advanced research program within the Department of Otolaryngology/Tel Aviv University. This includes acquiring independent funding from national and international research agencies. The research program will be part of the collaboration with the University of Toronto, TECHNA institution and MARS innovation center, Toronto.
The principles underpinning the research are to integrate modern technology platforms such as molecular imaging, novel nanoparticles and robotics with therapy. This requires development of novel nanoparticles, navigation and tracking techniques that opens the way for precise resection of tumors, while sparing healthy tissues. In this research, we have developed “near real-time” “on the table” three-dimensional images of tumors to provide valuable information as the therapy progresses, leading to more successful interventions and fewer side effects.
The major goals of this research projects revolve around the clinical translation of novel guidance and therapeutic technologies to investigate:
1) Use of novel imaging agents (nanoparticle contrast agents allowing navigation and development of novel applications including tumor and metastatic disease detection.
2) Use of novel therapeutics (nanoparticle for photothermal and photodynamic ablation)
3) Use of novel photonic imaging for guidance
4) Potential translational clinical trials for “first in human” use of therapeutic and imaging agents for real time image guided surgery.
5) Use of a novel PET agent for accurate and sensitive detection of tumors and lymph node metastases in head and neck cancer
6) Use of novel technique that provides rapid detection and classification of circulating tumor cell with high sensitivity and selectivity, using immune- magnetic nanoparticles analyzed by a microfluidic device.
7) Elucidating the immunological tumor-host interplay for clinically relevant applications.
8) Development of technologies used for diagnosis of malignancy and for monitoring response to treatment.
