Main description The Department of Neurosurgery of the Tel Aviv Medical Center specializes in treatments for disorders of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system in children and adults. The department is obliged to serve its patients with the highest of international standards while utilizing the most advanced equipment, technology and research.
The department incorporates a number of units and services:
Microsurgery of brain tumors and tumors of the skull base;
Treatment for all types of head and spinal cord injuries;
Vascular surgery for aneurysms and vascular malformations;
Pituitary surgery using the trans-sphenoidal technique, via one nostril only, which is unique to this unit (approximately 600 cases have been treated in this way)
Surgery of all segments of the spinal cord including anterior and posterior approaches for disc removal, vertebrate transplants, implants and other techniques for fusing the vertebrae;
Treatment for tumors and defects in the spinal cord and spinal column;
Endoscopic surgery and endoscopic assisted surgery – especially for tumors of the ventricles and treatment for hydrocephalus;
Treatment for hydrocephalus using various shunting techniques and hardware;
Insertion of vagal stimulating electrodes for treatment of severe epilepsy;
Surgery of the peripheral nerves and brachial plexus;
Functional neurosurgery, especially for epilepsy;
All types of pediatric neurosurgery.
Endovascular invasive neuroradiology
The department performs approximately 1800 operations per year using modern equipment such as the Neuronavigator, intra-operative MRI (MRT,) and simultaneous intra-operative electrophysiological recording for spinal and peripheral nerve operations.
The department houses 50 beds including eight beds in the intensive care unit and four beds in the “step-down” unit.
The department operates on the level of the major medical centers of the world to provide neurosurgical service to the residents of Tel Aviv, to referrals from all regions of the country and from around the world.
The medical staff is comprised of 20 physicians. The nursing staff is comprised of a head nurse, assistant head nurse, teaching nurse, registered nurses and others. The devoted staff has successfully treated thousands of patients. The staff is also actively involved in instructing doctors, nurses, and medical students from Tel Aviv University in Hebrew and students from New York University in English. The staff conducts clinical trials and basic research on an international basis.
The department runs an outpatient clinic twice a week, on Mondays morning and Thursdays midday, for diagnosis, appointments for admission, follow-up and continuing treatment.
